Dub Me Crazy #1 (2011)
Rennes est la 11ème ville plus peuplée de France, et le chef-lieu de la Bretagne. La culture musicale y est très ancrée, Rennes a même été considéré comme la capitale française du rock dans les années 80, avec des groupes locaux comme Marquis de Sade, Frakture, Billy Ze Kick, Les Ramoneurs de Menhirs (Bretagne) ou plus récemment Tagada Jones. On peut aussi citer Lorenzo et le grand DJ Netik, mais c’est surtout une ville où le dub est bien présent, notamment avec le mythique Legal Shot Sound System.
Créé en 2000 à Saint-Malo, le crew Legal Shot a rapidement pris la route de Rennes, et fait bouger la ville avec leur passion du rub-a-dub et digital. Ils ont notamment joué au El Cubanacan, haut-lieu des soirées rennaises, tous les mois de 2006 à 2008. Legal Shot organise tout d’abord des événements à Rennes, et s’exporte rapidement, d’abord à Paris au club Le Glazart et ses soirées « Paris Dub Me Crazy », puis dans les plus grands festivals français et européens (Reggae Sun Ska, Rototom Sunsplash, Dour Festival, Dub Camp…). Legal Shot, c’est aussi une émission, le « Dub Me Crazy Radio Show » sur Party Time, cumulant plus de 200 émissions entre 2011 et 2017. Legal Shot a aussi son propre label depuis 2013, Legal Shot Records, avec lequel ils proposent des 12 » en combinaison avec Macka B, Echo Minott, Solo Banton ou encore Lasai. Enfin, la renommée internationale de Legal Shot Sound System vient en partie de leur sono si reconnaissable, d’une qualité sonore rare, et de leur 12 scoops puissants.
De nombreux évènements ont accueilli ce Sound System à Rennes, comme les « Rennes Dub Me Crazy » organisés par Legal Shot. Ces soirées, qui ont eu lieu au Liberté, à la Salle de la Cité et au Ubu Club ont vu passer des artistes internationaux tel que Prince Jamo, Michael Prophet, ou Ackboo, ainsi que la crème des Sound Systems actuels : OBF, Blackboard Jungle, et Iration Steppas. Deux éditions des « House of Dub » ont également eu lieu au Liberté, sur les 3 stacks de Legal Shot, avec Biga Ranx, Mahom, Stand High Patrol, Bisou… Les infatigables du Legal Shot Sound System ont investi le 1988 Club pour leurs soirées « Style & Fashion », avec des chanteurs tels que JonnyGO Figure, Daddy Freddy, Peter Youthman ou Green Cross.
Rennes, c’est aussi le fief de I-Skankers, Sound System et label. Après avoir joué plusieurs fois au Café Laverie, International Skankers organise les « Rennes Dub Club » avec l’association Dancehall Attitude, ainsi que les « Dub Corner » en invitant Vibronics, King General, Salomon Heritage… I-Skankers est régulièrement invité au « Rock’n Solex Festival » (le plus ancien festival étudiant français). Les 4 vinyles estampillés I-Skankers Records sortis depuis 2011 sont rares mais chaque fois des succès, joués sur de nombreux Sound Systems internationaux.
Dans un style « 100% dubplate », le Burning Dancefloor organise les « Dub Box Meeting », soirées au cours desquelles différents Sounds (Irie Ites, Soul Stereo, Guiding Star…) viennent présenter leurs dubplates uniques, au Mondo Bizarro (aujourd’hui fermé).
Également organisés par Burning Dancefloor, les soirées « Jamaïca Station », « Bass Thérapie » ou « Ragga Jungle In da City » sont l’occasion pour les rennais de profiter de sélections spicy et raffinées, à « La Trinquette » ou « Au Coin des Mondes ».
Bout’40 Festival (2005)
A Rennes sévit également Roll & Record, qui organise les « Saturday Night Jamboree » en compagnie d’artistes locaux, généralement au Café de Rennes mais aussi au bar Le Dejazey ou à l’Alex’s Tavern. Ce dernier lieu a également accueilli les « Flash It & Gwaan », évènements organisés par Ruff A Dub Sound.
Le crew Bout’40 Sound, actif depuis 2004 et composé des jumeaux Damien C et MC Joh, a organisé à partir de 2005 leur Bout’40 Festival à Retiers, et ce pendant 10 ans. Iration Steppas, Aba Shanti, Bush Chemists et bien d’autres ont défilé sur la scène de ce festival breton. Après la création de leur sono 8 scoops en 2010, Bout’40 Sound a mis en place une résidence mensuelle au Mondo Bizarro, de 2012 à 2020, totalisant plus de 70 soirées dubwise, jouant leur propres morceaux avec Panda Dub, Miniman, Weeding Dub… Après avoir joué 3 années de suite au mythique United Nations of Dub (Leicester), ils sonorisent deux « Outlook Launch Party » au Jardin Moderneà Rennes, avec OBF, Maasai Warrior, et Mad Professor. Enfin, Bout’40 anime depuis 2010 sa propre émission de radio, « Dub Revolution », sur la radio locale Canal B.
Le festival emblématique de Rennes, les Rencontres Trans Musicales, qui a lieu tous les ans en décembre depuis sa création en 1979, célèbre avant tout la musique Rock, mais la programmation est variée et c’est l’occasion de profiter de soirées Dub en « off » du festival, dans différents lieux de la ville.
A 50km au nord de Rennes prend place le No Logo Festival BZH, chaque été depuis 2017. Réunissant la crème du Reggae international et de la culture Sound System sur la « Dub Arena », c’est l’événement annuel à ne pas manquer pour son line-up.
Vous l’aurez compris, pas le temps de s’ennuyer à Rennes !
Legal Shot Sound System (2019)
Côté labels, avec I-Skankers Records (2011) et Legal Shot Records (2013), on peut citer Bent Back Records, créé en 2009 à Rennes et aujourd’hui basé à Brooklyn. On retrouve sur chacun de leurs vinyles des chanteurs talentueux tel JonnyGo Figure, Yami Bolo, Tristan Palmer… Roll & Record a aussi sa branche Records, avec plusieurs 7 » au style digital avec Peter Youthman, Lasaï ou encore Cookah et Art-X. Le label Natural Tribe Record, créé entre Rennes et Belle Ile en Mer, fait la connexion entre ces deux lieux en proposant EPs et mixtapes au format digital.
Avec de nombreux événements toute l’année, entre gros festivals et soirées familiales dans des bars, et avec 6 Sound Systems plus actifs les uns que les autres, Rennes tient une bonne place dans la culture dub française, avec un penchant pour le style digital et rub-a-dub. Aux portes de la Bretagne, proche de Nantes et Belle-Ile en Mer (hyper prolifiques en terme de musique Dub), les connexions sont fréquentes entre toutes ces villes, ce qui ne laisse aucune excuse pour ne pas profiter de la culture Sound System en Ille-et-Vilaine !

Rennes is the 11th most populated city in France and is capital town of Bretagne. Musical culture is very present there, and was even considered as the french capital of rock music in the 80s, with local bands such as Marquis de Sade, Frakture, Billy Ze Kick, Les Ramoneurs de Menhirs (Bretagne) or more recently Tagada Jones. We can also mention Lorenzo and the great DJ Netik, but above all, it’s a city where dub music takes an important place, especially with the mythical Legal Shot Sound System.
Created in 2000 in Saint-Malo, the Legal Shot crew quickly took the road for Rennes, and woke up the city with their passion of rub-a-dub and digital. They notably performed at El Cubanacan, high place of parties in Rennes, each month from 2006 to 2008. At first, Legal Shot organized events in Rennes, then in Paris at Le Glazart and its gigs « Paris Dub Me Crazy », and finally in the biggest french and international festivals (Reggae Sun Ska, Rototom Sunsplash, Dour Festival, Dub Camp…). Legal Shot also hosts a radio show, the « Dub Me Crazy Radio Show » on Party Time, cumulating more than 200 broadcasts between 2011 and 2017. At last, the international fame of Legal Shot Sound System comes partly from their recognizable sound system, of rare sound quality, and their 12 powerful subwoofers.
Many events have hosted this Sound System in Rennes, such as the « Rennes Dub Me Crazy » organized by Legal Shot. Those gigs, taking place at the Liberté, at the Salle de la Cité and at Ubu Club saw many international artists like Prince Jamo, Michael Prophet, or Ackboo, as well as the best of current Sound Systems : OBF, Blackboard Jungle, and Iration Steppas. Two editions of the « House of Dub » also took place at the Liberté with Biga Ranx, Mahom, Stand High Patrol, Bisou… The tireless crew of Legal Shot Sound System has invested the 1988 Club for their « Style & Fashion » gigs, with singers such as JonnyGO Figure, Daddy Freddy, Peter Youthman or Green Cross.
Rennes is also the home of I-Skankers, Sound System and label. After many gigs at the Café Laverie, International Skankers organizes the « Rennes Dub Club » with the Dancehall Attitude association, as well as the « Dub Corner », inviting Vibronics, King General, Salomon Heritage… I-Skankers is regularly programmed at « Rock’n Solex Festival » (the oldest french student festival). The 4 vinyls signed by I-Skankers Records released since 2011 are rare but each time hits, played by many international Sound Systems.

Finally, Bout’40 host his own radio show, « Dub Revolution », since 2010 on local radio Canal B.
The iconic festival of Rennes, the Rencontres Trans Musicales, which takes place every year since its creation in 1979, celebrates above all Rock music, but the line up is diverse, and festival-goers can enjoy Dub parties at the « off » of the festival, in different places of the city.
50km north of Rennes takes place the No Logo Festival BZH, each summer since 2017. Gathering the very best of international Reggae bands and of Sound System culture at the « Dub Arena », it’s the annual event not to be missed for its line up.
You’ll have understood, there’s no time to get bored in Rennes !
Legal Shot Sound System (2019)
Concerning label, with I-Skankers Records (2011) and Legal Shot Records (2013), we can mention Bent Back Records, created in 2009 in Rennes and today based in Brooklyn. On each of its vinyls feature talented singers such as JonnyGo Figure, Yami Bolo, Tristan Palmer… Roll & Record also have its Records branch, with several 7 » with Peter Youthman, Lasaï or Cookah and Art-X. The Natural Tribe Record label, created between Rennes and Belle Ile en Mer, makes the connexion between these two places by offering EPs and mixtapes in digital format.
With many events all year round, between big festivals and family parties, and 6 Sound Systems, each one of them more active than the other, Rennes has its place in french dub culture, with a fondness for digital and rub-a-dub. At the gates of Britanny, near Nantes and Belle-Ile en Mer (really prolific in dub music), the connexions and meetings between these cities are common, which leaves no excuses not to enjoy the sound system culture in Ille-et-Vilaine department !

Après s’être penché sur des villes plutôt méridionales, les compilations City Squad partent vers le nord avec ce 4ème volet dédié à Lille et ses environs (Dunkerque, Calais…). Quatrième agglomération française et chef-lieu des Hauts-de-France, c’est dans la « Capitale des Flandres » que sont nés des groupes emblématiques de différents styles musicaux tels que Skip the Use, Loudblast, Gronibard ou encore Marcel et son Orchestre (à Boulogne-sur-Mer pour être exact). Mais le Dub et les Sound Systems occupent également une grande place dans la culture lilloise grâce à de nombreux activistes et producteurs.
À commencer par les pionniers du Chalice Sound System, qui dès 1996 ont fait danser les lillois, notamment avec leurs évènements mensuels au fameux Maquis Chalice. Avec la première sono artisanale de la région (voire l’une des premières françaises), Chalice ramène en France la culture Sound System anglaise, et invite sur place des pointures du dub international (Jah Observer, Mighty Massa, Gregory Fabulous…). Malheureusement fermé en 2013 après 12 ans d’activité, ce lieu emblématique reste dans les esprits de tous ceux l’ayant connu. De nombreux acteurs de la vie culturelle lilloise ont fait leurs armes avec Chalice, notamment Tomaski, selecta et producteur qui fonda One Way Sound au début des années 2000 avec le chanteur Mighty Cricket. Il produira par la suite des dubs pour différents labels, notamment Livication Corner Music. Ce dernier a été créé suite à l’association du duo de selecta Livication Sound (Weldon Powa et Robo Yut) et d’Obeah Hi-Fi. Parmi ces activistes orbitant autour de Chalice, on retrouvait aussi Moovdem Hi-Fi qui sélectait du dub avec Chalice, et a commencé à produire dubplates et vinyles en collaboration avec différents Sounds français et anglais.
10 Dubians – Head Free (2001)
Le premier live band dub lillois, 10 Dubians, est formé en 1997, et a évolué au gré du passage de ses membres, avant de devenir Dubians en 2002 et ses 7 musiciens permanents. Avec l’aide de I-Naty, grande activiste du dub lillois avec son Corpo Dub Sound, Dubians signe chez le label PIAS (où l’on a pu retrouver Kaly Live Dub). Après avoir enregistré deux EP, ils sortent leur premier album « Headfree » en 2001, mixé par l’anglais Neil Perch de Zion Train, qui brille par son originalité et sa diversité. Un second album sorti en 2003 emmène le groupe faire le tour des plus grands festivals français et internationaux. Ils tournent notamment beaucoup dans les pays de l’Est, entre la Hongrie, la Slovénie, l’Autriche… Autour de 2008, avec l’arrivée du numérique et les difficultés à faire tourner une équipe de 10 musiciens, le groupe se transforme en version Sound System à quatre : un machiniste, un bassiste, un flutiste, et la chanteuse Naïma. Des invités locaux viennent régulièrement partager la scène avec eux, tels que Weeding Dub ou Tomaski. Aujourd’hui, le groupe ne se produit plus mais ses membres sont toujours actifs dans le milieu : certains sont restés dans le dub, avec le duo Dubsquad, d’autres ont monté un groupe de ska/rocksteady, The Liquidators, avec des musiciens de Marcel et son Orchestre et Jfunk.
La Corpo Dub est un autre membre majeur de la culture dub de ces premières années, sous l’impulsion de I-Naty. Proche de Vibronics, The Disciples ou Bush Chemists, elle avait l’habitude de jouer leurs productions en session. Après de nombreux évènements organisés (les Dub in the Church au Rockline) et la création de l’émission de radio Sound 4 Massive, elle s’installe en Vendée où elle continue l’aventure Corpo Dub, avec la création de leur Sound System en 2010.
Une trentaine de ces activistes locaux ont fondé en 2004 l’association Community Sound System (CSSA), ainsi que la sono du même nom, suite à la désignation de Lille comme Capitale Européenne de la Culture. En deux semaines et sous les conseils de Lincoln, londonien d’origine jamaïcaine qui a créé la sono de Jah Observer, ils ont construit un Sound System de seize basses, et deux préamplis. Cette association organise et sonorise de nombreux évènements locaux, comme les United Sounds of Dub ou lors de la saison jamaïcaine à Roubaix en 2004, où ils ont accueilli les légendaires Studio One et King Jammy. Le CSSA est également à l’initiative du projet « Dis, c’est quoi un Sound System ?« , visant à transmettre cette culture via des expositions, la découverte du fonctionnement d’un préampli, de l’intérieur d’un scoop…
En 2008, la première édition du Reggae Waz’Fest est inaugurée, organisée par Chalice Sound System et Sono-Tone Sound. Chaque année jusqu’en 2016, la culture jamaïcaine est mise à l’honneur avec des affiches qui allient artistes locaux et internationaux. Word Sound & Power, Gussie P, OBF, Stand High Patrol et bien d’autres sont ainsi venus ambiancer le public du quartier de Wazemmes, le tout sur les sonos locales de Chalice ou du CSSA.
On retrouve également à Lille l’association L’Acouphène qui organise entre autres les soirées Skank Lab depuis 2013, et propose via Skank Lab Records des 12″ sur lesquels deux artistes produisent un morceau chacun et se remixent mutuellement (Mahom meets Panda Dub, Roots Raid meets Vibronics…).
Enfin, l’association Emana Sound créée en 2012 (suite au projet Bunker Sound System), organise les soirées solidaires Feeding with Bassline, dont les recettes des entrées sont reversées à des associations locales. De plus, ils proposent sur leur site internet des ressources administratives libres (fiches techniques, documents associatifs), des dubplates de différents artistes…
I Bingi Sound, Weeding Dub, Coptic Sound… (2005)
Citons côté promotion I Bingi Sound, dont les deux créateurs travaillent à promouvoir et diffuser la culture Sound System depuis 1999. Ils animent l’émission de radio Sound 4 Massive, initialement créée par I-Naty, tous les lundis de 22h à 23h sur Galaxie 95.3 FM, et ce depuis 2000. Restons sur la radio avec le Northern Lights Show, diffusé tous les mercredis de 21h à 23h sur Artikal Vibes Radio, par trois activistes locaux : Chalice Sound, Moovdem Hi-Fi et Steppaddict Sound. Sur Radioboomerang, l’émission Red Gold & Green propose 3h de Reggae les lundis de 20h à 23h, animé par Soul Iration et Ghetto Rockers. On reste sur la même radio, mais c’est le vendredi de 19h à 21h que Balistic Sound et Heartical Juggling proposent leur Juggling Radio Show. On peut au final nommer le selecta Jah Light Hi-Fi et son émission Music from Jamaïca émise sur les ondes de 1991 à 2006.
Les addicts de vinyles ne risquent pas d’être en manque dans la région. On vient de citer Emana Sound qui possède en outre une branche Records depuis 2014. Agobun Riddim Section et Skank Lab Records ont été mentionnés, mais d’autres peuvent aussi être suivis pour parfaire sa discographie : le label de Dready B, Roots Revelation Records (2009), Livication Corner Music basé entre Paris et Roubaix (des dizaines de sorties à son actif depuis 2008), Precious Oldies aka Carib’Soul (2012), Wise Vibes Records et Rootical Attack Records (depuis 2013), Steppaddict Records (2014), Wise&Dubwise Recordings (le label de Weeding Dub, depuis 2015), ou encore RKS Records (2018).
Au final, au moins 17 Sound Systems réchauffent de leur musique les départements septentrionaux, épaulés par les producteurs locaux, labels et activistes. Proches de la Belgique et du Royaume-Uni, il n’est pas rare de voir les artistes de ces pays partager la scène avec les lillois.

A bit of history about dub music in Lille….
After having looked into the more southern cities of France, the City Squad compilations are off to the north for this 4th part which will be dedicated to Lille and its surroundings (Dunkerque, Calais…). Lille is the 4th most populated city in France and it’s in this capital town of the region Haut de France that emblematic groups of different styles like Skip the Use, Loudblast, Gronibard or Marcel et son Orchestre (at Boulogne-sur-Mer precisely) were born. But Dub music and sound systems also play an important part in the culture of Lille thanks to its many activists and producers. Starting with the pioneers of the Chalice Sound System, who as early as 1996 made the Lille inhabitants dance, particularly with their monthly events at the famous place named Maquis Chalice. With the first homemade sound system of the region (perhaps even the first in France), Chalice brought the English sound system culture into France, and invited some of the best international dub artists (Jah Observer, Mighty Massa, Gregory Fabulous…). Unfortunately closed since 2013 after 12 years of events, this emblematic place has stayed in the minds of all who knew it. Many people of Lille’s cultural life earned their stripes with Chalice, in particular Tomaski, selector and producer who founded One Way Sound at the beginning of 2000 with the singer Mighty Cricket. He then produced dub versions for different labels, particularly for Livication Coner music. The latter was created after the partnership between the selecta of Livication Sound (Weldon Powa and Robo Yut) and Obeah Hi-Fi. Among the activists orbiting around Chalice, we could also find Moovdem Hi-Fi who selected dub music with Chalice, and who started producing dubplates and vinyls in collaboration with different French and English sound systems.
10 Dubians – Head Free (2001)
10 Dubians, the first live Dub Lille band, was formed in 1997 and evolved according to the presence of its members before becoming Dubians in 2002, composed of 7 permanent players. With I-Naty’s help, a big activist of the Lille dub scene with his Corpo Dub Sound, Dubians signed with the PIAS label (where Kaly Live dub was also to be found). After recording 2 EPs, their first album “Headfree” came out in 2001. It was mixed by English Neil Perch from Zion Train and stood out for its originality and its diversity. A second album came out in 2003 and allowed the group to play in some of the biggest French and international festivals. They toured particularly in the Eastern countries – Hungary, Slovenia, Austria… Around 2008 with the beginning of digital music and the difficulties involved in playing with a group composed of 10 musicians, the group transformed into a 4 people sound system version with one person on the digital side, a bassist, a flutist and a singer named Naïma. Some local groups, such as Weeding Dub or Tomaski, were regularly invited to share the stage with them. Nowadays, the group are no longer together but some of its members are still active in the music world : some have stayed in dub and have created Dubsquad, others have started a Ska/rocksteady group named the Liquidators, with other musicians from Marcel et son Orchestre and Jfunk.
La Corpo Dub was another important member of the dub culture’s early years, thanks to the drive and energy of I-Naty. Close to Vibronics, The Disciples or Bush Chemists, she was used to playing their productions during sessions. After organizing many events (the Dub in the church at the Rockline) and after the creation of a radio show named Sound 4 Massive, they established themselves in Vendée to continue the Corpo Dub adventure with the creation of their sound system in 2010. Around 2000, the Livication Corner, Coptic Sound and Weeding Dub trio were also organizing their evenings, at the Détour Café at Lille, at the Condition Publique and at the Cave aux Poètes at Roubaix.
About 30 of these local activists founded the Community Sound System Association (CSSA) in 2004, as well as the sound system of the same name, after the designation of Lille as the European capital of Culture. They built a 16 bass sound system and 2 pré-amps in two weeks, guided by the advice of Lincoln, a Londoner with Jamaican origins who created the Jah Observer’s sound system. This association organizes and puts music to many local events, like the United sounds of Dub or the Jamaican season at Roubaix where they hosted the legendary Studio One and King Jammy in 2004. The CSSA also initiated the Dis, c’est quoi un Sound System ? event (translates by : Hey, what’s a sound System ?), which aimed to transmit this culture via art expositions, animations to discover how an amp works or the inside of a scoop.
CSSA au festival Cabaret Vert (2016)
In 2008, the first edition of the Reggae Waz’fest was inaugurated and was organized by Chalice Sound system and Sono-tone Sound. From 2008 to 2016, the Jamaican culture was put in the spotlight every year during events which mixed local and international artists. Word Sound & Power, Gussie P, OBF, Stand High Patrol and many others came to liven things up for the audience of the Wazemmes district on the Sound systems of Chalice and of the CSSA. Speaking of particularly active crews, the Lille massives could not possibly have ignored the prolific Agobun Sound System. Permanent artists at the Bass Temple evenings (Storm & Break, Kiraden Sound System, Dawa Hifi..), at the Warrior Charge (Nyabin Sound System, Jahmbassador Hifi…) or at the Lille Dub All Stars (The Black Starliners, Haspar, Weeding Dub), Agobun participates in event after event, and doesn’t stop at that. In 2016 he created the Agobun Riddim Section, a label which has already produced about 10 quality vinyls.
At Lille, we can also find the Acouphène association which has been organizing, among others, the Skank Lab evenings since 2013. They also propose, via Skank Lab Records, 12″ discs on which 2 artists create a piece of music each and then they remix the other’s piece (Mahom meets Panda Dub, Roots Raid meets Vibronics…).
Finally, the Emana Sound Association, created in 2012 (following the Bunker Sound System project), organizes solidarity evenings named Feeding with Bassline, of which a part of the profits are donated to local associations. In addition, on their internet site they offer free administrative resources (like technical specification sheets, association documents), and dubplates of various artists.
I Bingi Sound, Weeding Dub, Coptic Sound… (2005)
On the promotion side we can talk about I Bingi Sound which is composed of two creators who have been promoting and diffusing the Sound System culture since 1999. They have a radio show named Sound 4 Massive, originally created by I Naty, and that has been broadcasted every Monday from 10 to 11pm on Galaxie 95.3 FM since 2000. Still talking about radios, the Northern Lights Show is broadcasted every Wednesday from 9 to 11pm on Artikal Vibes Radio, by 3 local activists: Chalice Sound, Moovdem Hi-Fi and Steppaddict Sound. On Radioboomerang also, the show called Red Gold & Green offers 3 hours of reggae music animated by Soul Iration and Ghetto Rockers on Mondays from 8 to 11pm. Still on the same radio but on Fridays from 7 to 9 pm, Balistic Sound and Heartical Juggling propose the Juggling Radio Show. Finally we can name Jah Light Hi-Fi and his show named Music from Jamaïca that was broadcasted from 1991 to 2006.
In the end, at least 17 sound systems are present to heat up the northern departments with their music, assisted by the local producers, labels and activists. And since they’re close to Belgium and to the United Kingdom it’s not uncommon to see artists from those countries sharing the stage with local artists.

Sous le soleil ardent de la Provence se dresse la cité de Marseille, carrefour de civilisations depuis 2600 ans. Préfecture de la région PACA et troisième agglomération la plus peuplée de France, la cité phocéenne évoque chaleur, détente et Pastis. Non contente d’avoir vu naître Fernandel ou Zidane, de mythiques chanteurs et groupes en sont originaires : IAM, Massilia Sound System, Soprano, Raspigaous ou encore Chinese Man… Côté Dub, Marseille et sa voisine Aix-en-Provence ne sont pas en reste.
Musical Riot à Marseille (2006)
L’association Musical Riot, créée en 2002, s’est rapidement imposée comme une référence dans les évènements dédiés au dub. Après avoir lancé les fameuses Dub Station dans de nombreuses villes européennes, et ce depuis 2005, Musical Riot se lance en 2010 dans l’organisation de son Dub Station Festival à quelques kilomètres de Marseille. De plus, l’association est active dans de nombreux autres festivals : Garance Reggae Festival, Télérama Dub Festival, Rototom Sunsplash… Dans les environs, on retrouve l’association Faut Qu’ça Sonne (intimement liée à Citywall), basée à Aix-en-Provence. Sa belle équipe organise de nombreuses sessions dans la région : les Aix Dub Club, les Massive’s Corner dont Welders Hifi est le crew résident, les Akwadub à l’Akwaba, le Southern Resistance Festival près de Nîmes… Derrière cette association se cache également le Walking Mess Records qui a sorti deux beaux vinyles en 2020. Les dub addicts aixois peuvent aussi profiter des sessions organisées par l’asso CMAE, les Skanking Foundation, qui se déroulent généralement au Relaisdepuis 2011. Le Jumping Lion Sound System y invite de nombreuses sonos pour des meetings d’anthologie. La dernière de ces sessions date de plusieurs années, mais les Skanking Foundation ne sont pas mortes ! Toujours à Aix-en-Provence, le restaurant et café-concert associatif Les Arcades organise des concerts à foison, avec du Rock, du Jazz, mais aussi énormément de Dub en accueillant sur place des Sound Systems locaux et internationaux.
Massive’s Corner #1 (2011)
Entre Aix et Marseille, c’est l’association Gardanne Minot qui a organisé plusieurs festivals dans un superbe parc arboré, avec des concerts live et des nuits Sound System, ambiance garantie en extérieur ! A Marseille, le Sound System Massilia Hifi est l’un des plus actifs en ayant joué de nombreuses fois au Molotov, et organisant depuis peu les bien nommées Dub’N’Pétanque au bar bio Le Chapiteau. Citons enfin l’association Capharn’aüm active depuis 2016 dans l’organisation d’évènements Dub, Reggae, Techno… C’est près d’une trentaine de soirées qui ont été organisées par ce crew, la plupart au Molotov à Marseille.
Bref, les sessions ne manquent pas dans les Bouches du Rhône qui regorgent d’activistes, intimement liés aux scènes des Alpes et d’Avignon.
Et en parlant d’activisme, citons 2 radios indépendantes locales qui changent la donne des radios actuelles. La première, Radio Fly Foot Selecta, créée en 2008 et basée à Marseille, diffuse 24h/24 Reggae, Hip-Hop et ses dérivés, avec des émissions spéciales par Natural Hi-fi ou Dj Domisoul. La seconde, Radio Zinzine Aix, diffuse depuis 1997 la musique qu’on entend trop peu à la radio, avec notamment le Zinzine Reggae Lab tous les dimanches après-midi, crew que l’on peut occasionnellement retrouver en sessions.

Côté Sound Systems, il y a également de quoi faire ! Le Jumping Lion Sound System a été créé en 2006 et n’arrête pas de faire vibrer les environs. Massilia Hifi a suivi en 2008 avec Sound System et productions maison. La sono verte de Natural Bashy Sound System a été construite en 2010 et a organisé quelques sessions Roots School en meeting avec des crews locaux. En 2012, l’eclectique Tribal Roots Sound System (du Roots, Drum’n’Bass, Dubstep et Bass Music) s’ajoute à la famille aixoise, avant de s’exporter en Haute Savoie aujourd’hui. Vers 2014, c’est le Walking Mess Sound System (anciennement Natural Warrior), cité plus haut, qui commence à faire ronronner ses 6 scoops dans de nombreuses soirées. En 2015, Up-full Brothers Sound System rejoint la danse, ainsi que Dubtrakz Sound System et leurs productions maison. L’année suivante, les aubagnais Garladub Sound System et l’Original Stepper Sound sortent à leur tour leurs sonos. Trois nouveaux Sound Systems apparaissent en 2017 avec celui du Livity Yard Sound System, de All Vibes Hifi, et des producteurs Black Beanie Dub. Enfin, en 2018, Lost Wave Sound System conclut cette série de youths.
C’est finalement pas moins de 13 Sound Systems artisanaux qui sont actifs dans la région de Marseille, sans compter ceux du Var ou du Vaucluse qui s’y déplacent régulièrement, un beau palmarès pour skanker au soleil !

Under the burning sun of the south of France, the city of Marseille has been the crossroads of civilizations for 2600 years. Capital town of the region “Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur” and third most densely populated city in France, Marseille evokes heat, relaxation and Pastis. Not satisfied with being the hometown of the famous Fernandel or Zidane, Marseille has given rise to many other famous singers and groups : IAM, Massilia Sound System, Soprano, Raspigaous or Chinese Man. When it comes to dub music, Marseille and its neighbor, Aix-en-Provence, are not to be outdone.
Massive’s Corner #1 (2011)
The association Musical Riot was created in 2002 and quickly became a reference when talking about dub events. As from 2005, after the famous Dub stations were started in many European cities, Musical Riot got into the organization of the Dub Station Festival in 2010, a few kilometers from Marseille. Furthermore, the association participates in many other festivals: Garance Reggae Festival, Télérama Dub Festival, Rototom Sunsplash… A real reference ! The association Faut Qu’ça Sonne (intimately linked to Citywall) is based in the nearby city of Aix-en-Provence. The team organizes many dub sessions in the region: the Aix Dub Club, the Massive’s Corner of which Welders Hifi is the permanent crew, the Akwadub at the Akwaba, the Southern Resistance Festival near Nîmes… Walking Mess Records is also part of the association and released two good vinyls in 2020. The dub addicts from Aix can also benefit from the sessions named the Skanking Foundation, organized by the CMAE association, and that generally take place at Le Relais since 2011. During these sessions, the Jumping Lion Sound System invites many other sound systems to create memorable meetings. The last of those sessions was a few years ago but the Skanking Foundation sessions aren’t dead ! Still in Aix-en-Provence, the restaurant and “café-concert” associative bar named Les Arcades organizes plenty of concerts where you can listen to Rock, Jazz but also a lot of dub music since they host local and also international sound systems.
Between Aix and Marseille, the Gardanne Minot association has organized several festivals in a lovely park full of trees, with live concerts and Sound system evenings with a great atmosphere. In Marseille the Massilia Hifi Sound System is one of the most active sound systems, they have played many times at the renowned Molotov concert hall, and have recently started to organize the aptly named Dub’N’Pétanque sessions at the organic bar Le Chapiteau. Let’s not forget the Capharn’aüm association, in activity since 2016 they organize dub, reggae, techno and other music style events. Nearly thirty evenings have been organized by this crew, many of them at the Molotov in Marseille.
Anyway, the Bouches du Rhone certainly doesn’t lack sessions and are full of activists that are deeply linked to the Alpes and Avignon dub scene.
When talking about activism, 2 local and independent radios come to mind because they make a big difference in today’s radio stations. The first one, Radio Fly Foot Selecta was created in 2008 and is based in Marseille. It broadcasts reggae, hip-hop and derivative styles 24 hours a day as well as special shows by Natural Hi-Fi and Dj Domisoul. The second one is Radio Zinzine Aix which, since 1997, has been broadcasting music that we don’t usually hear on radio stations, such as the Zinzine Reggae Lab every Sunday afternoon, which we can also occasionally find in sessions.

Concerning Sound systems, there’s also plenty of things to do ! The Jumping Lion Sound System was created in 2006 and is still very active. Massilia Hifi also followed the move and built a sound system and homemade productions in 2008. The Natural Bashy Sound System’s green speakers were built in 2010, then they organized a few sessions named Roots School during which local crews were invited. In 2012, the eclectic Tribal Roots Sound System (Roots, Drum’n’Bass, Dubstep and Bass Music) joined the Aix family before leaving for the Haute Savoie region (more so in the north of France). Around 2014, the Walking Mess Sound System (previously named Natural Warrior), mentioned above, started to participate in many evening events with its 6 scoops. In 2015, Up-full Brothers Sound System joined the dance, as well as Dubtrackz Sound System and their homemade productions. The following year, the Garladub Sound System from Aubagne and the Original Stepper Sound, also build their sound system. Three new Sound systems appeared in 2017, the Livity Yard Sound System, the All Vibes Hifi, and also producers named Black Beanie Dub. Finally, the Lost Wave Sound System concludes this series of new sound systems with their own built in 2018.
Finally, no less than 13 handmade Sound Systems are active in the Marseille region, and that’s without considering those from the Var and Vaucluse regions who regularly come to play around Marseille, so you have here a great list of people and places to skank in the sun !

Au pied des massifs du Vercors, de la chaîne de Belledonne et de la Chartreuse, le chef-lieu de l’Isère (38) règne sur les Alpes depuis plus de 2000 ans. Ayant engendré des personnalités reconnues comme l’auteur Stendhal, le compositeur Berlioz, ou le youtubeur Mister V pour les plus jeunes, et vu grandir des groupes plus ou moins appréciés comme Calogero, Gnawa Diffusion ou Sinsemilia, c’est dans la culture Sound System que Grenoble tire son épingle du jeu.
Depuis 2003, l’association Roots’n’Culture organise son festival estival accueillant les plus grandes têtes d’affiche de la musique alternative (les premières années), s’orientant de plus en plus vers la musique Reggae jusqu’à devenir strictly Sound System depuis 2017. Accueillant des artistes locaux et internationaux, l’association propose aux spectateurs de payer une partie de leur entrée avec des produits alimentaires reversés à la Banque Alimentaire de l’Isère : bon marché et solidaire, une iniative à soutenir ! De plus, Roots’n’Culture ne s’arrête pas à son festival en organisant toute l’année nombre d’évènements Dub dans les salles grenobloises.
Elles sont d’ailleurs nombreuses à avoir accueilli des concerts dub ou des Sound System meeting : la Belle Electrique, le Drak-Art, l’Ampérage (ex-Adaep), la Bobine, le Redrum… Les amateurs de Sound System connaissent forcément Grenoble depuis quelques années grâce à l’Alp’in Dub Festival qui se déroule dans les montagnes alentours à l’initiative de l’association Punky Reggae Party, et regroupe toujours près d’une dizaine de sonos locales, depuis 2015. Dans un cadre magique et pour un prix largement accessible, ce festival est rapidement devenu une référence chez les aficionados de festival Sound System en permettant de clôturer l’été en beauté !

Citons également l’association Capokaze basée dans le Grésivaudan, à quelques kilomètres de Grenoble, qui organise entre autres les Valley Dub Club où sont réunis Sound Systems et dubmakers français. Les amateurs de Dancehall apprécieront les soirées Nice and Easy, gérées par Yessaï Crew et Soul Crucial Sound, à la Bobine. Le label Senoï Project, qui aurait dû célébrer son premier festival en 2020, est basé à Grenoble mais s’exporte aux alentours, proposant des évènements orientés Dub to Trance et des releases psychédéliques pour promouvoir cette nouvelle scène électronique sans frontières musicales. Enfin, les plus énervés d’entre vous apprécieront le travail du collectif Bass Jump qui promeut la culture Bass Music et Drum’n’bass à travers leurs DJs et évènements.

Au total, pas moins de 14 Sound Systems sont aujourd’hui actifs dans la région grenobloise, et c’est sans compter les crews des Alpes qui ne sont jamais loin… En passant par Grenoble, t’as plus aucune excuse pour ne pas profiter de cette culture prolifique !

At the foot of the Vercors Mountain, of the Belledone and Chartreuse mountain range, the capital town of the department of Isere (38) has reigned over the Alps for over 2000 years. Hometown to many famous people such as Stendhal the author, Berlioz the composer, or Mister V the youtuber for the younger generation, Grenoble has also witnessed the evolution of several more or less appreciated groups such as Calogero, Gnawa Diffusion and Sinsemilia. However, it’s in the Sound System culture that Grenoble stands out.
Since 2003, the Roots’n’Culture association has organized a summer festival which hosts some of the biggest headlines of the alternative music, but little by little it has turned itself towards reggae music and is now (since 2017) a strictly Sound System event. It hosts local and international artists, the association offers to pay a part of the participants entry ticket with food that is donated to the Isere food bank. A cheap and supportive solution which makes it an initiative worth supporting ! Furthermore, Roots’n’culture doesn’t only organize its festival, it also organizes many other Dub events in Grenoble all year round.
By the way, many Grenoble concert halls have already hosted dub concerts or sound system meetings : la Belle Electrique, le Drak-Art, l’Ampérage (ex-Adaep), la Bobine, le Redrum… Dub enthusiasts obviously know Grenoble thanks to the Alp’in Dub Festival which, since 2015, has taken place in the surrounding mountains, always hosting at least 10 local sound systems thanks to the Punky Reggae Party association. Located in a magical setting and offering reasonable prices, this festival quickly became a reference for the Sound system fans allowing them to end summer on a high note.

Let us not forget the Capokaze association based a few miles from Grenoble in the Grésivaudan, which organizes, among others, the Valley Dub club where many French sound systems and Dub makers reunite. Dancehall fans will appreciate the Nice and Easy evenings organized by the Yessaï Crew and Soul Crucial Sound at La Bobine. The record label Senoï Project that was supposed to celebrate its first festival in 2020, is based in Grenoble but organizes Dub to Trance events in the area and releases psychedelic projects in order to promote this new music scene that has no musical limits. Finally the most energetic amongstyou will appreciate the work of the Bass Jump collective that promotes the Bass music and Drum’n’Bass culture through events and DJ’s.
Let’s now talk about sound systems, since this culture is particularly present in Grenoble. In 1995 Manu and Crucial B created the Stéréo Earthquake Sound (anciently Zion Posse) and played as first part in many concerts : Gladiators, Burning Spear, Culture… As Dancehall enthusiasts, they also regularly participated in Soundclashes with the exclusive dubplates that had been accumulating for years. In 2001 the mythical Red Lion Sound System was created. They were part of the French pioneers to have built their own sound system, inspired by their English elders. After organizing their first event with Manutension (from Improvisators Dub, see « City Squad – Bordeaux« ), also French pioneer, they organized many other events with Aba Shanti, Disciples and Iration Steppas among others.
All in all, no less than 14 sound systems are active around Grenoble, without counting the crews from the Alps that aren’t that far. If you’re passing through Grenoble you no longer have any excuse not to make the most of this prolific culture.

Jah Shaka à L’Usine, 1995
Bordeaux, 9ème ville française la plus peuplée, préfecture de Gironde (33), lieu de naissance du poète Ausone, d’Aliénor d’Aquitaine, de Montaigne et Montesquieu, fief de Serge Lama, Partenaire Particulier, Noir Désir, Odezenne, et les Hurlements d’Léo.
Mais on est ici pour parler Dub et Sound System, et « la Belle Endormie » porte mal son nom si l’on se penche sur son histoire vis-à-vis du Dub.
Comment alors ne pas débuter avec les mythiques Improvisators Dub, premier live band du dub français ayant sévi de 1994 à 2009, qui a sans aucun doute inspiré la nouvelle scène française grâce à leurs concerts survoltés où les instruments étaient dubbés live & direct. Pionniers du novo-dub ou électro dub, ce n’est sûrement pas un hasard si ce style musical est largement représenté à Bordeaux. Grâce à leur activisme, de nombreux artistes précurseurs anglais sont venus jouer dans leur ville : Iration Steppas, Alpha & Omega, Martin Campbell, Jonah Dan… Évoquons également Manutension, membre fondateur des Improvisators Dub et actif en solo, activiste infatigable du Dub ayant laissé son empreinte grâce à de talentueux mixes hypnotiques et particulièrement vivants. C’est à son initiative que Bordeaux a, sans doute, été la première ville à accueillir le premier Sound System anglais, en l’occurrence la sono de Jah Shaka en décembre 1995 (flyer ci-joint). En 1998, le collectif Uzinadub rentre dans la danse et fait vibrer la foule sur ses productions « electro dub to jungle ». Actif jusqu’en 2004 en collectif, ses membres sont encore investis dans le milieu Sound System aujourd’hui : Sir Hill (fondateur de Control Tower Records), DJ Koniks et les producteurs Dub Machinist, I-Tist, et Dub Browser.
Improvisators Dub – Hybride (1998)
Bordeaux, c’est aussi des évènements, avec le célèbre Reggae Sun Ska Festival, renommé Médoc Sun Ska en 2020, rassemblant les plus grands artistes internationaux du Reggae depuis 1998, le plaçant dans le palmarès des plus vieux festivals Reggae européens encore actifs ! Mentionnons également le So Good Festival, orienté Dub et musiques électroniques, proposant une programmation alléchante depuis 2009. Les soirées sont nombreuses et ce toute l’année, on vous invite à jeter un oeil du côté des Bordeaux Dub School organisés par Wandem Sound System, les évènements de la M.A.C. du CROUS, les Dirty Skank par Dirty Knees, les Dub Temple par Quetzal’Coalition, les Lyrical Yard par Full Concept, L’antidote est le dub par Musicalarsouille, les Sclanking Dub Session par la Clank ou encore les évènements organisés par SunDub Bordeaux et Lézard Des Champs. Bref, il y a de quoi skanker tous les week-ends ! Mention spéciale au « Jimmy« , bar ouvert de 1961 à 2000 ayant accueilli des centaines de groupes et DJs, plutôt orienté rock mais où l’on a pu y voir Dub Syndicate, Improvisators Dub ou New York Ska Jazz Ensemble pour ne citer qu’eux.
Côté maisons de production, impossible de passer à côté de « Baco Records« , basé à Bordeaux et produisant la crème du Reggae français et international (Groundation, Danakil, Max Romeo…) depuis 2011. Plus éclectique, « Banzaï Lab » est actif depuis 2008 et promeut aussi bien le Hip-Hop et l’Electro que la Bass Music et le Dub avec Smokey Joe & The Kid, Al’Tarba ou le local Feldub. Acteur tout aussi incontournable, « SoundRising Records » soutient depuis 2013 Dub, Urban et Bass Music grâce à de nombreuses sorties en téléchargement libre. Enfin, le label « Breakbeat Fury Recordings« , créé par DJ Norman, est plus orienté Drum & Bass et Bass Music, mais propose quelques morceaux Dub, notamment sur ses compilations Underground Bordeaux Massive qui regroupent la crème de la Bass Music bordelaise.
Marre de la répétition « Sound System » ? Les girondins, eux, ne sont pas « gavés », et sont toujours plus nombreux à promouvoir cette culture avec pas moins de 16 sonos ! De là à proclamer Bordeaux « Capitale française du Dub »… On vous laisse seuls juges !

A bit of history about dub music in Bordeaux….

Bordeaux is the 9th most populated town in France. It is in the department of Gironde (33). Many famous French celebrities and artists came from this city : “Ausone”, “Aliénor of Aquitaine”, “Montaigne”, “Montesquieu”, “Serge Lama”, “Partenaire Particulier”, “Noir Désir”, “Odezenne”, and “Les Hurlements d’Léo”.
But we’re mostly here to speak about dub music and sound systems and you’re going to learn why Bordeaux’s surname “la Belle Endormie” (which means the “Sleeping Beauty”), doesn’t suit it well when we’re talking about Dub music.
When talking about this city we have to start by talking about the mythical Improvisators Dub, which was the first French dub live band ,active from 1994 to 2009. Without a doubt they have inspired the current French scene through their supercharged concerts where the instruments were “dubbed” live. Being pioneers of novo-dub or electro-dub, it probably isn’t a coincidence that this style is greatly present in Bordeaux. Thanks to their activism, many English precursor artists came to play in their city as from the end of the 90s : Iration Steppas, Alpha & Omega, Martin Campbell, Jonah Dan… We can also talk about Manutension, founding member of the Improvisators Dub , active solo artist and relentless dub activist, as he has left his imprint thanks to his talented hypnotic and particularly lively mixes. It’s on his initiative that Bordeaux was surely the first city to host the English sound system of Jah Shaka in December 1995 (see flyer at left). In 1998 the Uzinadub collective enters the scene and attracts crowds with their “electro dub to jungle” productions. The collective was active as such until 2004, but its members are still invested in the sound system world : Sir Hill (founding member of Control Tower Records), DJ Koniks and the producers Dub Machinist, I-Tist and Dub Bowser.
Improvisators Dub – Hybride (1998)
Bordeaux also hosts many events, such as the famous Reggae Sun Ska Festival, renamed Medoc Sun Ska in 2020 and has reunited the biggest international reggae artists since 1998, making it one of the oldest active European reggae festivals. Let us not forget the So Good Festival which is oriented around dub and electronic music and has been proposing an attractive programme since 2009. As far as production companies are concerned, it would be impossible not to mention « Baco Records » based at Bordeaux which has been producing excellent French and international reggae artists, such as Groundation, Danakil and Max Romeo, since 2001. A little more eclectic, « Banzaï Lab » has been active since 2008 and not only promotes Hip-Hop and Electro but also Bass Music and Dub with artists like Smokey Joe & The Kid, Al’Tarba ou le local Feldub. As essential players of the Bordeaux music scene we can also name « SoundRising Records » who have been supporting Dub, Urban and Bass Music since 2013 thanks to many free to download releases. And finally, the record label “Breakbeat Fury Recordings”, created by DJ Norman, essentially orientated towards Drum & Bass and Bass Music, proposes a few dub titles, particularly in its Underground Bordeaux Massive compilations which bring together the best of Bordeaux’s Bass music.
It would seem that Bordeaux citizens are not yet tired of hearing Sound Systems everywhere. More and more people promote the Sound System culture every day with no less than 16 Sound Systems ! Can we safely say that Bordeaux is the French capital of Dub music …? We’ll let you make up your own mind !
